This site tells the powerful story of Chinese immigrants who were held prisoner on Angel Island. They were subjected to barbaric practices, such as intrusive medical exams by Western doctors. As an expression of their suffering, they wrote poems on the prison walls. These poems were considered graffiti and painted over, so their authors begain to carve them into the walls. This site was designed to educate about this important part of our nation's heritage and aid in its preservation.
